5 Ways to Make Your Executive Thank-You Letter Count
5 Ways to Make Yur Executive Thank-You Letter CountNetworking skills are of extreme importance when functioning at any spot on the corporate ladder, but as an executive you have even more work to do. As you know, a part of networking is communicating after youve completed the interviewing process. This can easily be accomplished by sending out a thank-you letter.Thank-you letters show just how much you appreciated the opportunity to apply. But leid only that, they also give you an amazing opportunity to market yourself yet again for the position. If youre at a loss for how to create an executive-level thank-you letter that will stick with the employer, here are some tips to make yours count1 Reiterate Your ExpertiseTake this opportunity to address any specific needs, issues, or challenges the company communicated it needs assistance with. By reiterating your level of expertise and ability to solve the problems while moving the company in new, exciting, and profitable directions, your e sure to make a lasting impression on management.2 Highlight Specific AccomplishmentsYou also want to utilize this fantastic opportunity to highlight your strongest areas. Think of some special accomplishments that go above and beyond what the company is asking of you, whether they are initiatives youve masterminded or seemingly unsolvable problems youve managed to figure out. The company needs to know its getting a superstar in your field, so nows your chance to prove youre that person.3 Overcome any ObjectionsIf you found that you faced a bit of objection during the interview or at any other point in your candidacy, take a moment within your thank-you letter to respond to those concerns. You can demonstrate that the issues arent really obstacles. Instead, they are opportunities to fully and successfully meet the challenge.4 Dont Make It Too Short Or LongWhen deciding on the length of the thank-you letter, you dont want to find yourself writing another cover letter or executive a utobiography. But on the other hand, you dont want to write a one-sentence, handwritten thank-you card. To play it safe, consider making yours no longer than one page. This way, you can dig deep without boring the reader to death with a bunch of information they already know.5 Thank EveryoneBefore you submit your thank-you letter, be sure to thank everyone who helped you in the processfrom the secretary who took all of your calls, to the various interviewers throughout the process. Taking time to acknowledge everyone is not only impressive, its the right thing to do. So be sure not to leave anyone off when writing your letter. There was a time that sending your letter via snail mail was the only way to go, but with electronic communication being the norm, you may miss your chance if you send yours this way. So consider e-mailing your thank-you letter, or if you really want to impress with the snail mail letter, overnight it.For additional tips and advice on resumes and cover letters, follow us on Twitter GreatResume or visit our blog.

Why Im Sick of the Way People Respond When I Say I Work at a Hospital
Why Im Sick of the Way People Respond When I Say I Work at a Hospital Its an innocent and ritterlich question to ask someone what they do for a living. After all, we spend a majority of our life at work, and our career can reveal a lot about who we are, what we enjoy, our strengths, and our interests. But before you ask someone, think hard did you already guess an idea of the response? Are you typecasting others without realizing it? As I recently stepped back and began to notice how people engage with me on this question, I realized that many of us are, in fact, presuming we know something about other peoples careers before giving them the space to speak for themselves.I work at a hospital. That is pretty straightforward, and when asked what I do, I usually start with that before I elaborate. Time and time again, people immediately respond by asking me, Are you a nurse?Of course, this is a common profession at a hospital, so in some ways it is not a surprising guess. On the flip sid e, so is being a doctor and no one has ever once asked me if I am a doctor. (For the record, I am neither I do PR and marketing for a hospital). In a world where we are told we can be anything we want when we grow up, why dont we seem to assume this of each other? Why do people decide for themselves that I must be a nurse, but never think to ask if I am a doctor? And would a man in my situation receive the saatkorn question but with doctor where the word nurse is?I began asking friends and family. My brother noted that his clients refer to his female coworker, who works in the same position as he does, as his secretary. My friend, a lawyer in New York, told me that she is always asked if she is a paralegal. A doctor I spoke with said she is still called a nurse even after introducing herself as a doctor. Clearly this bias extends across industries and professions. This line of thinking you are a woman and you can be anything, but you probably are not. You are probably not in charg e of decisions, money, rules. You are probably not the manager, the boss, the leader is more widespread than I even expected. The point is not that one profession is above another, but rather that we need to stop unternehmensverbund each other back with our own biases. In essence, women are constantly being told that we fit certain categories. We are great for jobs requiring nurture and support. We are here to help others. Women are good at this, but whos to say men arent, too? And whos to say that women arent as fit to be doctors or lawyers or CEOs, or any professions that people presume to be more dominated by men? When we are always put into boxes, isnt it bound to affect us over time? We might not go for that promotion, raise or new opportunity because we get it in our heads that its still against the norm. Everyone sees us in a certain way, so maybe it makes fruchtwein sense to be that way. These preconceived notions do not develop overnight, nor will they disappear overnight. But out of fairness to each other, we should try to dissolve them. We might need to remind ourselves what we tell kids everyday we can be anything we want. And next time we ask someone what they do, lets take a hard pause and let them answer before making a guess ourselves.--Susan Griffiths is a writer at heart who does Public Relations, Communications and Marketing for a hospital in Washington, DC.

This Robots Mission is to Solve the Worlds Water Crisis
This Robots Mission is to Solve the Worlds Water Crisis This Robots Mission is to Solve the Worlds Water Crisis This Robots Mission is to Solve the Worlds Water CrisisTheres a finite supply of water. Were running out of it, and we cant manufacture more. That means we have to do a much better job at managing and preserving what we have. A Boston startup is trying to do just that with a new robot.WatchTower Robotics has created a soft-sided autonomous robot about the size of a softball that when inserted into a length of water pipe can find and detect leaks of nearly any size. Its carried along by nothing more than the force of the water moving through the pipe.Lighthouse (left) and Daisy, two earlier versions of the leak detecting bot. Image WatchTower RoboticsWater loss is a big problem. Theres money to solve it but no solutions in the marketplace, said Tyler Mantel, the companys product strategy lead, adding that company co-founder You Wu first began developing the robot as his thes is at MIT. So six years of development led to the product we have today, which is able to find leaks in all pipe materials, looking for leaks the same way youd feel the suction on the end of vacuum cleaner.Given the severity of the pending crisis, experts in the field say, solutions like these cant hit the mainstream fast enough.Nearly 1.8 billion people will be living in absolute water scarcity by 2025, meaning there are inadequate natural water resources in their area to sttze local demand, according to the United Nations. This differs from economic water scarcity, which is the result of poor management of water resources. Even today, water scarcity of both types impacts around 2.8 billion people worldwide at least one month out of the year. That number grows steadily. The problem is global, and its going to get a lot worse before it gets any better. For You The Moral Beauty of a Disobedient RobotMost of the worlds water supply goes toward agriculture, which uses about 70 percent of the total. That number increases regularly. The global population is on track to reach 9.7 billion people by 2050, meaning there will soon be far more mouths to feed and much more strain on our already-stressed water supplies.Despite the large number, heavy agricultural use is only part of the problem. Much of the water infrastructure in the U.S., such as underground pipes and treatment stations, is old and outdated. Materials that have been in use that long naturally break down over time, and when that happens they leak.In the developing world this is an even sharper problem. In Saudi Arabia, the most expensive water market in the world, up to 30 percent of the countrys water is lost due to leaks and maintenance issues. Whats needed, then, is a device that can travel through water pipes and feel for leaks, notifying authorities when it finds one so that they can fix it.That is what WatchTower Robotics built. The current prototype is conical and built with soft robotic components in cluding a series of small wings on all sides that are attached to sensors. As the robot travels through the pipe the wings pull in the direction of a leak due to the force of the water leaving the pipe, registering that tug at the sensor. The robots internal tracking mechanism then geotags the location and stores it for later analysis. Traditional GPS technology doesnt work that well since most water pipes are underground, but the tracking this robot uses can typically pinpoint a leak down to an area of about a foot for every 500 feet of travel. That kind of accuracy is new to most utilities, which often dig up large sections of a street to find and fix a small leak. The reason for that caught Mantel and the rest of the development team off guard.Early on we were sitting with a customer and showing him how the geotagging could pinpoint a leak on their GIS map within a couple of feet, and he looked me in the eyes and said, Hey, can you help me find my pipe?It turns out that much of th e water infrastructure in this country and elsewhere is more than 70 years old, making it difficult for utilities to know exactly where some of their pipes are located. They have a rough idea of the path theyre taking, but in some cases very limited knowledge of exactly where to dig in the event of an emergency.Autonomous sensing robots like this one are helping make those limitations a thing of the past. One of the major innovations in robotics in recent years is the advent of soft robotics. Soft tactile materials replace the rigid metal frames typically used in hard bots to provide them with more lifelike and flexible movement. For Mantel and Wus prototype, this means a device that functions better than rigid smart PIGs, or pipe inspection gauges, for their purposes. Not being on a rigid frame allows us to compress and go through pipe geometry that other Smart PIGs never were able to, Mantel said. The other pipe inspection products are all smaller than the pipe diameter, which means they lose a lot in being able to isolate to the center of the pipe and being able to operate as a plug flow. Being compressible also allows it to stay oriented. I can turn and go through pipe geometries like a control valve or a tuberculation or anything thats diameter restricted without any problems.Although WatchTower is still in the startup stage, it is already thinking beyond water pipe testing for its robots and looking into gas line testing and other scenarios where liquids are flowing through pipes. But right now they feel that the biggest impact they can have is in water pipes. When Dr. Wu and I founded this company we had a conversation about what we wanted to do and we both agreed that we wanted to create something that made a positive impact on the world, Mantel said. That has driven a lot of decisions including how were going to price ourselves moving forward. The closest product to ours in function and form is a $25,000 a mile product, which only makes sense for large m unicipalities if they have a localized problem. We want to get down to $2,000 a mile on average so that we can help with preventative maintenance and in the developing world. Thats where were going next.Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer.Read More Robots Use Environmental Clues to Build Structures Sensors Allow Robots to Feel Sensation Submersible Robot Harpoons Reef-Damaging Lionfish For Further Discussion Water loss is a big problem. This infographic explains the Art Science of Networking
This infographic explains the Art Science of NetworkingThis infographic explains the Art Science of NetworkingWhen was the last time you attended a networking event? There were probably business cards flying everywhere, and even some people may have seemed to be in a contest to see how many business cards they could hand out without even talking to anyone. Unfortunately, thats not networking at all, and if thats how you are doing it, you are wasting your time.Real networking is about building relationships. While those same networking events arent always the best place to do it, you can build relationships anywhere if you are trying to do it the right way. Focus on meeting people and taking a genuine interest in what they do instead of trying to rack up as many LinkedIn connections as possible, or just searching for someone who can give you a job.Networking is important for building your career, but its also important for building yourself up as a person. Having a strong network gi ves you access to mentorship throughout your career as well as people you can call on when you need help or advice on a project, or in your career. And people with stronger networks are healthier overall, tooClick here to view a high-resolution version of the infographic.
